One interesting aspect of my life has to be the year I spent playing roller derby. Now I know what you may thinking, "her roller derby?!”, and the answer to that is yes. I've done it and learned so much from the experience. I got into roller derby one summer when my mom wanted my sister and me out of the house. She saw a post about it on Facebook and thought, “oh this will get them out the house for a while”. We attended the clinics and I found the sport to be exciting and life changing. Aside from the physical aspect of the game, I’ve learned important life lessons like the concept of teamwork and how to use it effectively. The point of the game is to work together with three other girls to protect your jammer, the one who score points, while also getting her through “the pack”. As each member of the team must be aware of and anticipate the movements of their teammates and the needs of the jammer communication, verbal and non-verbal, was also a vital part of the game. Through roller derby I have developed and improved my ability to communicate important information as well as pick up on non-verbal cues. Doing roller derby taught me how to be more confident in myself.
