Curator, Arts Administrator, and Writer in San Antonio, Texas
I am a curator, art historian, and arts administrator with over 15 years of experience working with leading museums and nonprofit organizations around the United States. In October 2023, I was appointed the first Curator of Latinx Art at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. It's an honor to work with such an incredible team on groundbreaking projects, and it's especially meaningful to be back in my hometown.
As Assistant Curator at DePaul Art Museum (DPAM) in Chicago, I focused on expanding the art historical canon to improve the representation of marginalized identities. At DPAM, I contributed to numerous projects, including the exhibitions LatinXAmerican, Remember Where You Are, Eric J. Garcia: The Bald Eagle's Toupee, and Barbara Jones-Hogu: Resist, Relate, Unite. I was formerly the Curatorial Fellow for Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where I collaborated on exhibitions, programs, and catalogs, including 9 Artists, Art at the Center: 75 Years of Walker Collections, and International Pop. As an independent curator and consultant, I have worked with institutions including the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Independent Curators International, Museo Tamayo, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Weisman Art Museum, Table Chicago, Lit y Luz Festival, and the Chicago Artist Coalition.
In 2013, I completed dual Masters at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism and Arts Administration and Policy; my graduate thesis examined anthropology, museology, and performance in work by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Coco Fusco. I also have a BA in Art History from Rice University, where my honors thesis addressed the usage of identity terminology in Latino contemporary art.
I am an alumnus of the Smithsonian Latino Museum Studies Program and an alumnus of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures Leadership Institute. My writing has appeared in publications by DePaul Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum Houston, the Walker Art Center, Prospect New Orleans, Arte Publico Press, and Hyperallergic.
My practice focuses on contemporary art, specializing in Latinx art, socially engaged artists, and identity politics. I am passionate about storytelling through art and amplifying the work of artists and creatives. I am always interested in new curatorial and writing opportunities. I also enjoy giving talks and participating in juries and selection committees. Let's connect!
