Michael Beitz
Sculptur and Artist in Boulder, CO
A recipient of the West Prize and a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant, Michael Beitz has become known for his innovative sculptures located at sites across the US. He takes common objects, such as a piece of furniture, and provides dynamic movement to the piece, for example, a great knot in the middle of a couch or the planks of a picnic table running over a railing or up the side of the building. Through his work, Michael Beitz hopes to encourage dialogue on human interactions, including themes such as alienation and intimacy.
Michael Beitz holds both a BFA and MFA in sculpture, as well as years of experience studying under Wendell Castle, an artist well-known for his work in furniture. He has also pursued further development of his craft through programs such as the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, John Michael Kohler Art Center Residency, and Sculpture Space Residency.
Alongside his work as a sculptor, he has given lectures and workshops on art, further sharing his unique perspective. He also enjoys doodling and drawing in his spare time.
