Asheville, NC

A photojournalist and educator, Michael Carlebach lives and works in the Asheville, North Carolina, area. Before obtaining his doctorate in American Civilization in 1988, Michael Carlebach earned a Master of Arts from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University.

Over the course of his career, Michael Carlebach’s art has been featured in a number of significant exhibitions. Most recently, his work was shown at the Center for the Study of the American South in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the Otto G. Richter Library of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Selected pieces by Michael Carlebach also appear in the permanent collection of the International Museum of Photography and Film at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York.

In 2010, a collection of Michael Carlebach’s photographs was compiled in the book Sunny Land: Pictures from Paradise. Including seminal work from the 1970s through 2004, this volume, from Safe Harbor Books, depicts South Florida’s attractions, residents, and holidaymakers in all their (frequently absurd) glory. In 2012, the book was the subject of a New York Times article by David W. Dunlap entitled “Odd Shadows in a Sunny Land.”
