Michael Deem was appointed Director of Drug Design at CuraGen Corporation while still a research scientist. In order to provide new medications for a range of wounds and ailments, he was in charge of overseeing several research programs. In an effort to develop new pharmaceutical products, Michael Deem assessed possible therapeutic targets, collaborate with a wide range of other scientists to determine which targets were workable, and organize financing for several research initiatives.
The department at Rice University developed throughout his tenure there and was often recognized as one of the top 10 biomedical engineering departments in the nation. In addition, as recognition for his leadership and research, Michael Deem was appointed the John W. Cox Professor of Bioengineering and Physics & Astronomy.
