Dr. Michael J. DeLor earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Syracuse University in 1995 and has since worked in a variety of roles in diverse industries, beginning with a stint as a proofreader for the New York State Legislative Bill Drafting Commission. He subsequently worked concurrently as an associate at JC Penney and research analyst with New York State Senate (NYSS). Michael Delor has also worked at retail stores Filene's, Target, and Lowe's Home Improvement, but he has spent the majority of his career in government and education.

After working as a legislative aide with NYSS, Dr. Michael Delor enrolled at the University of Wyoming in pursuit of a master's degree in public administration and served as a graduate assistant in the program. He subsequently completed a PhD in public administration and public affairs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and worked at its Financial Aide Office.

From there, Dr. Delor has held teaching positions at Virginia Teach, Roanoke College, Radford University, and Elon University. Since 2016, he has taught US and Texas government and politics courses at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He has earned several awards including the Prestage-Cook Travel Award from the Southern Political Science Association and the Elwood Mead Book Award from the University of Wyoming.
