Michael Ira Asen

After earning his bachelor of arts from Syracuse University, Michael Ira Asen studied law at Brooklyn Law School to pursue his juris doctor degree. In his second year at law school, he began trying criminal cases before judges and juries. Michael Ira Asen accepted an appointment as a federal defender after graduation. Practicing within the US District Court, Eastern District of New York, he represented clients who faced criminal charges ranging from drug importation and distribution to political terrorism. After more than 100 jury trials in both Federal Courts and state courts, he entered the private practice of law.

His areas of professional concentration included legal and medical malpractice, personal injury, corporate shareholder and partnership disputes, estate litigation, and matrimonial litigation. For the past 15 years, his practice is particularly focused on cases involving civil recovery for retail theft. These cases involve helping retailers recover civil penalties and damages as a result of employee retail theft and shoplifting incidents. As Chief Counsel for The Zellman Group, LLC, Mr. Asen also spearheads the effort to compensate his retail merchant clients for losses due to organized retail crime.
