My work points to the construction of visual and perceptual systems which are often taken for granted or assumed to be natural or given. By creating ruptures in a viewer’s visual experience, I seek to create reverberations that cause a viewer to question other assumed truths in their life.
Operating within a multi-disciplinary and project based practice, I primarily make architectural installations and life-size, sculptural tableaus both of which include new-media elements. Imagery from science fiction and fantasy are my source materials and set and prop construction techniques borrowed from the theatre are the basis for my methods of production.
I use different levels and qualities of finish on the objects and visual elements within a piece to make the viewer question the realness of the different components. This questioning is not only in relation to remembered objects from the viewer’s daily life but in comparison to other objects or components within the piece itself. The varied levels of detail create a visual hierarchy amongst the components of the piece. The disparity in detail also asks the viewer to fill in the blanks and complete the environment to a level they are comfortable with based on the systems I have visually provided.
