Michael Sugerman

Los Angeles, California, United States

I am currently a junior in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and graduated from Harvard-Westlake School in 2013.

I've always loved writing. This summer, I am interning at both The Hollywood Reporter and Participant Media's emerging social justice news site, TakePart.com.

At Michigan, I'm a reporter for our flagship publication, The Michigan Daily, where I cover the student government beat and serve as an assistant news editor.

I've had a passion for journalism since joining my high school newspaper, the Harvard-Westlake Chronicle, in 10th grade. In my senior year, I served as the managing news editor and won the school's "Chronicle Award," which is given each year to a graduating senior for demonstrating leadership and excellence in the newsroom.

In addition to newswriting, I love opinion writing. I'm a big fan of Mitch Albom, Chris Erskine and Bill Plaschke, among others. I had a monthly column called "What Grinds My Gears" in my ninth grade year, and wrote columns and editorials throughout my senior year on The Chronicle. Now, I publish personal opinion content on a burgeoning writing site called Caffio.

I'm very interested in entering the journalism industry later in life, although I'd also be open to working in public relations at some point.

My hobbies include reading, photography, sketching cartoons and playing tennis. I've also begun to write an original play. But that's less of a public venture.
