In 2001, Miguel Fernandez co-founded the telecommunications carrier Transtelco in El Paso, Texas, his hometown. Transtelco is a bi-national carrier, serving customers at leading companies throughout both the United States and Mexico. It operates a fiber optic network spanning more than 6,000 miles. He remains the company's CEO and presides over big picture operations such as mergers and acquisitions. Miguel Fernandez has built strong business relationships with partners both in and outside of El Paso and closely follows border and trade agreement issues that impact these partnerships.

The telecommunications leader launched a new company in 2006. His real estate firm focuses on large development projects in the commercial and hospitality sectors. His involvement with local real estate led him to serve on his home city's Planning Commission.

The entrepreneur has filled several other leadership roles in his community in recent years. He joined the Medical Center of the Americas Board of Directors in 2011, an organization that supports local healthcare and biomedical initiatives. Miguel Fernandez has also served as a board member for the local Children's Hospital, the Hub of Human Innovation, and various local telecom industry events.
