Miguel Fernández Flores
Director and Producer/Shooter in NYC
I’m a freelance, New York-based Mexican documentary director and producer-shooter with over 15 years of experience. Currently, I’m co-directing a three-part series for Netflix with Muck Media, set to air in mid-2026. I directed “Cartel USA,” an episode of the fifth season of National Geographic’s Trafficked with Mariana Van Zeller, which was nominated for three News & Documentary Emmys. I’m also a regular contributor to The Sunday Times, where I work as a producer-shooter on short documentaries and as a stills photographer across the region.
Previously, I spent nine years as a staff Senior Field Producer-Shooter at VICE News in New York, working across all stages of production, from development and field production to post. I traveled extensively across Latin America and the United States, producing and shooting documentaries and podcasts, often in complex, security-sensitive environments. My work spanned both short- and long-form productions for flagship programs including VICE News Tonight and weekly series for HBO, Showtime, and Hulu, as well as podcasts such as VICE News Reports, El Hilo, and other VICE Audio productions.

Before VICE, I worked as a video journalist in Barcelona and Madrid (2006–2014), filming and editing hundreds of news videos with 24-hour turnarounds as a one-man band.
Before working in journalism, I was a junior criminal lawyer in Mexico City.
I speak fluent English, French and Spanish.
