Mikayla Murphy

Hi, I'm Mikayla Murphy and I'm a student at OSU.

My top 5 StrengthQuest strengths are: positivity, woo, communication, strategic, and focus. These are very accurate strengths. I have always strived to be a positive situation no matter what it is because I have found that it puts everyone in a better mood and makes things more fun. Positivist means being encouraging and happy to everyone around you. It impacts my academic life because I make studying all night or writing a 10 page paper seem fun.I would consider myself a woo because I am a huge people person and I love communicating with others. I'm strategic because I like to think everything through, and I have a unique ability to focus on a specific task.

My favorite OSU tradition is Carmen Ohio. Carmen Ohio is Ohio State’s alma mater and the oldest school song still around. This tradition is important to me because just like the football players, the swimmers do it following every meet. In our suits, we form a big circle on the pool deck. We put our arms around each other while we sing Carmen Ohio and sway back and forth. This is one of my favorite things to do, because win or lose, we all come together and remember how great our school is. Carmen Ohio is by far my favorite OSU tradition. From this assignment, I learned how important traditions are. This will help me during my four years at OSU by showing that no matter where I go in life, always remember where home is.

While bringing my first semester at OSU to a close, I have come up with 5 lessons for future buckeye freshman:

1. You are never too cool to get good grades.

2. You don’t have to drink or go out just because your friends are.

3. You don’t have to stay up late just because your roommate is.

4. Don’t look cute for class.

5. Find a study area.

From this assignment, I learned how hard my first semester of college was. I had to overcome lots and figure out many things. These tips I have learned will help me in the future because I now know how to study and handle my independence.
