Reuters has a fascinating look into how WellPoint canceled health insurance for individuals after they become ill. The insurer is using a computer algorithm that automatically targeted “policyholders recently diagnosed with breast cancer” and investigated them for “fraud," according to Reuters’ Murray Waas, Once the women were singled out the insurer then canceled their policies based on erroneous information. But WellPoint had specifically targeted women with breast cancer for aggressive investigation with the intent to cancel their policies, investigators told Reuters' Murray Waas. The disclosures by Reuters’ Murray Waas come after Reuters detailed how Assurant targeted HIV-positive policyholders.
