Mike Capps
Tech Executive in Raleigh, North Carolina
Mike dreams about a utopian future of human-computer interaction, then spends the rest of the day making sure we don’t make a wrong turn down a dystopian alley.
Mike’s particularly concerned about the state and trajectory of decision transparency in machine learning systems, especially in safety-critical systems. So he’s doing something about that, and will share more soon.
Mike leans on his experience as a game designer, executive producer, lead writer, lead programmer, research professor, industry advocate, and technology executive. He's best known for his decade as the president of Epic Games, makers of the mega-hit Fortnite and Gears of War franchises and the award-winning Unreal Engine. Mike has served on the boards of dozens of companies, industry groups, non-profits, and professional organizations; current roles include Sphero robotics, Autarch tabletop gaming, Lonerider Brewing, and the Open Metaverse Federation. Mike's been featured as a technology expert and futurist on multiple documentary series on the Discovery, Military, and Science channels. He started his career with degrees from UNC, MIT, and the Naval Postgraduate School, where he served on the research faculty with a focus on networked virtual reality and simulations.
