Hey! I'm Mike. I am:
A podcaster: I currently host and produce two podcasts: Detoxicity (which explores what it means to be a man in the 21st century) and FM To MTV (in which I and some friends talk about the music we grew up with). I've interviewed some seriously cool people for Detoxicity, including comedians Chris Gethard and Josh Gondelman; psychologists Daniel Block and Michael Friedman, and musicians Akie Bermiss of Lake Street Dive, Bryan Carter and Kevin Devine.
A music industry professional: I've worked in music since 1993, in capacities ranging from retail to PR to distribution. In 2020, I was honored by Billboard Magazine as one of 40 influential LGBTQ music executives on their annualPride Power Players List.
A music journalist: I've written reviews and other critical pieces forPopmatters,Ultimate Classic Rock, Popdose, ESD Music, andThe Boombox (to name a few).I'm retired, I guess? The world doesn't need any more music critics.
A mental health advocate: Icreated the initiative Mindful Vinyl, which releases limited edition versions of albums on green vinyl, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the mental health charity the JED Foundation (JED). We've released (or re-released) albums by Living Colour, Bad Brains, Fishbone, Blue October and more. I've spoken on panels and at colleges, discussing my own experiences with mental health struggles (I am diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD and AD/HD).
A radio personality: I hosted "The Jheri Curl Chronicles" on Radio Free Brooklyn from 2016-2020, and will be returning to the RFB airwaves with a new show in fall 2021.
A New Yorker: I was born in and is currently a resident of Brooklyn, NY.
