Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
Millard McCluney’s rearing in South Carolina was enriched with unconditional love and compassion for others. He learned about humility and caring for others from his family and community. That foundation is what made him the man he is today.
At his undergraduate alma mater and subsequently, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he received his Master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Millard further developed his curiosity and passion for helping others. This passion extended to his work with youth and the underprivileged in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region.
Millard has had the opportunity and privilege to volunteer at many fine Charlotte organizations such as Youth Works, Smart Start Healthy Families Mecklenburg, the United Way of Central Carolinas, Men’s Shelter of Charlotte, Eastside CDC, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Council on Aging and Habitat for Humanity. Because of his involvement with these organizations, he has helped to better the lives of those in the county in which he lives.
Today, he encourages young people to find their life’s purpose and strive for their dreams in his capacity as Youth Outreach & Scholarship Coordinator for the Housing Authority of the City of Charlotte. His leadership role in this Scholarship Program connects youth to and prepares them for their dream getting a post-secondary education, making the dream not only a possible but a reality. The annual awards day event for the program that Millard organizes and coordinates provides encouragement and inspiration for youth to attend school beyond high school, and gives the opportunity for awardees to shine in their community, becoming a positive role model for others. This is one of the many events he leads throughout the year to get these students ready for college. Millard embodies his favorite quote by Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” He is living his purpose of helping others and, hopefully, making the world better.
