Communication in crisis can be a challenge or opportunity depending on how communicators respond.

I'm an assistant professor of media writing at East Tennessee State University.

My research focuses on local news coverage of natural disasters and how journalists act as strategic communicators. After working as a journalist and public relations professional in Washington, DC and South Florida I see the role of the local journalist during a natural disaster as one that can engage community response. In addition to journalists, local governments and nonprofit organizations play a vital role in community resilience and long-term recovery.

My PhD is for the Missouri School of Journalism and I've taught at Missouri and most recently Appalachian State University before coming to East Tennessee State. I have a BA in Journalism/Public Relations from Baylor University, an MA in Communication, Culture and Technology from Georgetown. I love traveling specifically to see family.
