Mitchell S. Engelhart affiliates with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, a non-profit organization of general aviation pilots throughout the United States. Based in Maryland, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), represents the interests of its members in terms of economic, utility, and safety flight trends and needs.

Founded just before the onset of the United States' involvement in World War II, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association possesses a long history in aviation. As one of its first political activities, AOPA championed for the Civilian Pilot Training Program, which allowed pilots to earn their certifications with government subsidies. AOPA urged the United States Senate to pass the bill, which was also designed to inspire aviation activity and aircraft sales. Soon after this piece of legislation, the organization doubled in sized and began to form local AOPA Units around the country.

AOPA continued to represent pilots in government lobby efforts during the war and beyond. The organization took a lead role in educating pilots with the newest instruments and equipment systems, including the VHF omnidirectional range and the instrument landing system. In the 1950s, AOPA campaigned for lower rates for pilot life insurance plans, highway retention on sectional aeronautical charts, and Washington National Airport's continued general aviation operations.

As AOPA progressed, it established branches all over the world. Currently, its mission is to educate policy makers and the general public on the critical role general aviation plays in the nation's economy. AOPA publishes two periodicals every month: "AOPA Pilot" and "AOPA Flight Training." Certified pilots like Captain Mitchell S. Engelhart enjoy "AOPA Pilot" for the latest information in aviation-related legislation and economic issues. The journal also offers pilots the chance to browse new products, aircrafts, and other items for purchase.
