Dr. Mitchell Hutchings is a voice professor, opera director, baritone, and vocal pedagogue based in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area. He is an Associate Professor of Voice at Florida Atlantic University, where he directs Florida Atlantic Opera Theatre and founded FAU Opera in Italy, an international program developed in partnership with the Conservatorio “G. Puccini” in La Spezia. His work regularly takes him between the United States and Europe, with recent teaching, research, and artistic projects in Italy and Spain.

As a teacher, Mitchell works with singers across classical voice, opera, musical theatre, and contemporary commercial styles. His students and former students have performed with companies and organizations including Washington National Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Glimmerglass Festival, Shenzhen Opera, and the Croatian National Theatre, and have continued their studies at institutions including Yale, Eastman, Manhattan School of Music, Peabody, Boston University, Florida State, and Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

His own career has included opera, musical theatre, concert work, recording, and artistic production. He has performed with Utah Festival Opera, Opera Saratoga, Pensacola Opera, Charlottesville Opera, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and other organizations in the United States and Europe, with appearances ranging from Carnegie Hall to performances in Italy and Central Europe. He is also a voting member of the Recording Academy and has contributed as a performer, producer, arranger, and conductor to internationally recognized recording projects.

Mitchell serves as President of the South Florida Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and as a Florida State Representative for the National Opera Association. His current interests include training twenty-first-century singers, international opera education, vocal pedagogy, lyric theatre, recording, and how technology is changing performance and arts education.

He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, with interdisciplinary study in Voice Pedagogy and Pathology; his Master of Music from Florida State University; and his Bachelor of Music from Western Carolina University.

Outside the university, Mitchell enjoys travel, hiking, food, architecture, history, and spending as much time as possible in Europe and exploring new places. He is based in South Florida and is currently single.
