Marilda Kane
In Pakistan, Marilda grew up like the other expatriot children whose parents were either Diplomats, worked as engineers in international companies building a dam, or worked in the hospital or school. Graduating from the International School of Islamabad, she received a scholarship at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, California, where she finished Pre - School Education. A Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the East, Philippines, majoring in English followed as well as several beauty pageants, modeling stints for FINA Magazine, Avon, Philippines Airlines, Rough Rider and Wrangler Jeans. With Mrs. Sonia Roco, as the Directress, she joined one of the first Pre - schools established in the Philippines. At Miriam College she was a Language and Reading Teacher. As an author of a series of books for National Book Store she still receives royalty. Marilda was also a successful Property Manager for her parents who were in the Real Estate Business in the Philippines. Before coming to Canada she taught at the International School in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her other educational attainments include a Social Work degree, certificate in Emergency Paramedics and becoming a Doula.
In Canada, Marilda first worked as a Liaison Worker for the ESL Centre, Edmonton Catholic Schools. She assessed the English language capabilities, as well the native tongue of new Filipino children entering into the Canadian school system. At Catholic Social Services, Millwoods Welcome Centre for Immigrants site, she worked as a Settlement Counsellor for Immigration and Settlement Service and was in charge of the Filipino Drop-In and Information Centre where many Filipino volunteers helped her welcome newcomers and those in need, after office hours.
AWARDS? She has these, too! The HIYAS Award of Excellence, for Community Service, RISE (Recognizing Immigrant Success and Endeavors) Awards for Health, Human Services and Education, Rhoda Abada Award for Outstanding Leadership and Community Service and, the Alberta Centennial Medal, paying tribute to individuals for achievements that have benefited fellow citizens, the community and the province. The medal is to be worn with official honours.
