NAMAI shares tips on Asbestos Protection in Older Homes

The National Association of Mold and Asbestos Inspectors (NAMAI) has shared tips on Asbestos protection for occupants of older homes. According to the NAMAI Asbestos is a serious health risk, and it may still exist in the materials used in homes built in the 1970s.

NAMAI Executive Director Mike Adams says it is important that homeowners know about the potential risk of Asbestos presence, as well as disturbance in structures that are built at least 30 to 40 years ago. He emphasized that the health risks are real, and are not meant to scare homeowners from living a good life in their nice but older residential property.

“While we understand the charm of living in an older home, there are risks that are involved in living in such homes. The asbestos problem in these older houses are real and if this element is disturbed, everyone’s health will be at serious risk,” explains Adams.

Older home improvement website This Old House came up with a comprehensive blogpost on Asbestos and its possible impact on residents of homes found to have been built with materials containing Asbestos. Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization

“Highly-effective and inexpensive fire-retardant material and thermal and acoustic insulator, asbestos was used extensively in home construction from the early 1940s through the 1970s. However, we now know that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung disease. When disturbed, tiny abrasive asbestos fibers are easily inhaled, which damages lung tissue and can cause cancer. In homes built prior to 1975, asbestos is most commonly found as thermal insulation on basement boilers and pipes. Unfortunately, it can also be found in a myriad of other household materials.”
