Born and raised in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa, I am currently based in New York. I write socially engaged books, and my ideology is rooted in the Swahili philosophy of Utu.

An Alumna of the Aga Khan High School on Mombasa Island in Kenya, and graduate of Africa Nazarene University, Nairobi in Kenya: I majored in Peace & Conflict Studies, and work in the sectors of Peace Research-Conflict Resolution, Editing, Arts and Project Management.

My work has been recognized by several literary awards bodies including the Penguin Prize for African Writing, the James Currey Prize for African Literature, the Burt Award for African Young Adult Literature, the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature, the Nommo Awards of the African Speculative Fiction Society (ASFS), and the National Book Development Council of Kenya (NBDCK).

I am on a 2024 Kenya Publishers Association's 25 Notable Authors and Books list from the past 25 years with The Shark Attack ,and on 2024 Nuria Bookstore's Top 100 Authors and Books with Shifting Sands. I was apexart NYC (New York City) Fellow, 2022-2023 Writer-in-Residence at IAS-CEU (Institute for Advanced Study- Central European University), recipient of of a 2023 PEN America Endangered Fund grant for writers, and a 2024 Authors League Fund grant.
