I am a Mombasa born-and-raised Kenyan writer of socially engaged books which explore Kenya’s coastal identities. My ideology and identity are both rooted in the Swahili culture and philosophy of Utu.

An Alumna of the Aga Khan High School on Mombasa Island in Kenya, and graduate of Africa Nazarene University, Nairobi in Kenya: I majored in Peace and Conflict Studies - and freelance on Peace Research and Conflict Resolution.

My work has been recognized by several literary awards bodies including the Penguin Prize for African Writing, the James Currey Prize for African Literature, the Burt Award for African Young Adult Literature (BAAYAL), the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature, the Nommo Awards of the African Speculative Fiction Society (ASFS), and the National Book Development Council of Kenya (NBDCK).

I was apexart NYC (New York City) Fellow, and 2022-2023 Writer-in-Residence at IAS-CEU (Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University).
