Favorite Childhood Memory:
Bear with me, this story starts out a bit morbid. So when I was young, probably about 5-6, my grandfather died. I didn't really understand what was going on, all I really knew is that my dad, my rockstar, was hurting. The night after my grandfather died, I had a dream about him. He basically told me to tell my dad that it was going to be ok, and that he loved him. Me, being a young naive kid, did exactly that. I told him that his father loved him and that he was proud of him. My dad still claims to this day that that day is one of his favorite things I did when I was a kid.
Favorite Campus Spot:
Technically, my favorite thing is driving to Pullman because of the beautiful (sometimes boring) view, but my favorite place on campus is the observatory. Most of the time, I don't even go in to it, but the view right next to it looks over all the buildings on campus. At night, you can see all the lights on for campus, but look to the right and it's pitch black with a million stars. It's a little bit of both worlds for me.
What advice do I have for new Cougar parents?
I'm an out-of-state student, so when I first got here my mom called me every day. Although she meant well and missed me (because I'm her favorite daughter), it was hard for me to be engaged with the people I was around. My advice is to let your kids set the boundaries. When they call you, whether it is good or bad, it will be when they need you. Getting into a new environment puts a lot of students out of their comfort zone, but the university is here to set up activities and opportunities to meet new and different kinds of people. I know it is tough not being able to see them and talk to them all the time, but they also need the opportunity to seek and find what they are looking for.
