In an era where food insecurity and environmental degradation threaten millions, One young Nigerian is redefining how we think about farming and sustainability. Moses Mshelia Gaskiya, a first-class Soil Science student at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is proving that innovation, passion, and resilience can drive real change

  • Early Life and Inspiration

He grew up on a farm, where he developed a deep respect for nature and a passion for agriculture. After the loss of his father in 2008, his mother’s dedication to sustaining the family through farming instilled in him a lifelong commitment to agriculture. This personal journey shaped his vision of using farming not just as a livelihood, but as a tool for solving global challenges.

Moses is the founder of ECOBLOOM FARMS (formerly Farm with Gaskiya), a social enterprise that combats two pressing issues: plastic waste pollution and food insecurity.

By recycling discarded plastics, including bottles, into vertical farming systems, his venture produces healthy crops such as lettuce and pepper while promoting climate-smart agriculture. Beyond farming, ECOBLOOM FARMS is a training hub — empowering over 350 Nigerian youths online and more than 10 on-site trainees with practical skills in vertical farming and sustainable practices.

  • Leadership and Impact

Moses is not only an innovator but also a leader within his academic and faith communities.

  1. Tutorial Coordinator for his faculty, supporting fellow students academically.
  2. Director of Media & Publicity for his Christian fellowship, leveraging communication for impact.
  3. Environmental Advocate, actively engaging in cleanup campaigns and tree-planting initiatives.
  4. Academic Director for NACA ABU Zaria……. Through these roles, he combines academic excellence with service, ensuring his impact reaches beyond the classroom and farm.
  • Award and Recognition

Moses’ groundbreaking work has earned him recognition at national and continental levels:

  • 🏆 Winner, Sahel Scholars Agribusiness Pitch Competition (2023/24) — securing seed funding to launch his vertical farming enterprise.
  • Winner, Agri Innovation Hackathon (2024) for his vertical farming model.
  • Admitted into the Nigerian Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) Scholars Program, Class of 2025.
  • Scholarship recipient: SABMF as a testament to his academic excellence

These milestones highlight his growing influence as a youth leader in agribusiness innovation.

  • Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Moses envisions expanding ECOBLOOM FARMS into a model for urban and rural food production across Africa. His dream is to see young people embrace agriculture, not only as a means of livelihood but as a pathway to solving climate change, unemployment, and food insecurity.

“Agriculture is more than planting crops; it’s planting hope, resilience, and solutions for future generations.” — Moses Mshelia Gaskiya
