Miguel Otárola

My name is Miguel Otárola Alfaro, and I am a Journalism student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Ariz. I am also a student at Barrett, the Honors College at ASU, one of the top honors colleges in the United States.I am currently Editor-in-Chief for the Downtown Devil, a downtown-Phoenix news site focused on hyperlocal content and published by ASU students. I am also a breaking news intern for The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com.

This past summer I was a metro reporting intern for The Seattle Times in Seattle, WA. Before that I spent two-and-a-half years interning for The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com in various positions, including breaking news reporting, copy editing, metro/features producing and social media producing. I also wrote in Spanish for La Voz Arizona, the sister publication for The Arizona Republic.

I've occupied a variety of other positions with Downtown Devil, an SPJ award-winning site, including Arts and Entertainment editor, copy editor and reporter.Besides journalism, my passions have centered around education and leadership. I interned with Desert Garden Montessori School in Phoenix in Spring 2015, helping students create their own school newspaper. I also produced writing lessons for freshman students at Phoenix's Bioscience High School.

I was born in Antofagasta, Chile in 1993 and moved to Tucson, Ariz. in 2002, where I lived until I moved to Phoenix to study journalism in 2012. Some of my favorite hobbies include listening to and playing music, collecting vinyl, playing racquetball and writing.
