Dr. Gbenekanu Ledornu Mpigi is an entrepreneur, development planning expert, human capital development specialist, and public policy practitioner with extensive experience spanning government, academia, international development, entrepreneurship, and institutional capacity building. His professional career has focused on developing sustainable strategies for economic growth, local content development, enterprise development, and human capital enhancement across Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
He is widely recognized for his expertise in entrepreneurship development, local content policy implementation, organizational development, and strategic planning. Over the years, he has provided technical support and advisory services on capacity development, institutional strengthening, curriculum development, and sustainable development initiatives. His collaborative leadership style, innovative thinking, and commitment to empowering individuals and institutions have earned him recognition within both the public and private sectors.
Dr. Mpigi holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Development Planning Unit (DPU), University College London (UCL), United Kingdom. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Environment and Sustainable Development from University College London and another Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Bedfordshire, Luton, UK. A Bachelor of Science degree in Human Anatomy from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. In addition, he has completed executive and professional programmes, including Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies at Harvard Business School and Project Management at the Knowledge Academy, London, where he is a certified practitioner.
During his time at University College London, Dr. Mpigi actively contributed to research and academic engagements on development planning, sustainable urban development, entrepreneurship, and economic transformation. His research interests focus on local content development, entrepreneurship ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, and inclusive economic growth in resource-rich economies.
Dr. Mpigi currently serves as the Head of Entrepreneurship Training at the Nigerian Content Academy (NCA), the training arm of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). In this capacity, he leads the design and implementation of entrepreneurship development programmes aimed at building globally competitive Nigerian entrepreneurs and strengthening indigenous participation in the oil and gas value chain. He also coordinates strategic partnerships with universities, development institutions, industry stakeholders, and international organizations to advance human capital development and innovation.
Prior to his current appointment, he served as Supervisor, Standards and Strategic Planning in the Capacity Building Directorate of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, where he coordinated strategic human capital development initiatives and industry capacity-building programmes for operators and service companies within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
Dr. Mpigi has championed several institutional reforms, including curriculum development for the Nigerian Content Academy, the establishment of professional certification programmes in local content management, and the development of innovative training models that integrate entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and sustainable development. He has also facilitated capacity-building programmes for public institutions, multinational companies, indigenous businesses, and young entrepreneurs.
Beyond his public service responsibilities, Dr. Mpigi is an advocate for youth empowerment, enterprise development, and sustainable community development. He has spoken at conferences, workshops, leadership forums, and academic events on entrepreneurship, local content development, economic diversification, innovation, and human capital development. He continues to mentor emerging entrepreneurs and professionals while contributing to policy conversations on Nigeria’s economic transformation and industrial competitiveness.
Dr. Mpigi is also actively involved in professional, academic, and community development initiatives. He serves as the Coordinator of the University College London (UCL) Alumni Nigeria Chapter, where he promotes collaboration among alumni and fosters partnerships between Nigerian institutions and the global academic community. He is a Board member of the Sustainable Ogoni People Initiative (SOPI), a local NGO that prides itself on putting its people first in sustainability and environmental matters. Dr. Mpigi is the Secretary of Beth-El Anglican Church Koroma Tai in the Diocese of Ogoni.
