The Neighborhood Café That Falls Church Didn't Know It Needed

There's a certain kind of place that's hard to describe until you've sat in it — where the coffee is serious, the food feels personal, and the room has enough warmth to make you forget you had somewhere else to be. Along Columbia Pike in Falls Church, Virginia, tucked inside Barcroft Plaza, that place is a 45-seat counter-service café with penny-tile floors, a pressed tin ceiling, and marble tables.

It opened in the summer of 2024. Word spread fast — the way it always does when something is genuinely good.

A Name with Roots

The name tells you everything about where this place comes from. MQR is shorthand for Maqur — a district in the Ghazni province of east-central Afghanistan, and the birthplace of owner Nor Powanda. A lawyer who works in international trade, Powanda made the move to the DMV from New York and brought with him both a New York sensibility for bold, unfussy food and a deep personal connection to Middle Eastern and Central Asian flavors.

That intersection — New York grit, Afghan heritage, DMV community — is essentially the identity of the entire menu.

Coffee First, Always

The specialty coffee program here isn't an afterthought. Beans are sourced from high-altitude coffee belts chosen for vibrant, complex flavor profiles. Arlington Magazine's dining critic said it plainly after visiting: the pistachio latte alone — made with a house syrup of raw pistachios, brown and white sugar, and vanilla beans, pulled with espresso and steamed whole milk — was worth the trip.

A Biscoff latte, a figfolk latte made with homemade fig syrup, and a rotating cast of seasonal drinks round out a lineup that regulars keep coming back for.

Food That Crosses Borders (On Purpose)

Walk up to the counter and the menu will give you a moment's pause — not because it's overwhelming, but because it's genuinely unexpected. This is all-day brunch with a passport.

Breakfast spans from a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel — made with halal beef bacon — to an Afghan-style shakshuka served with Afghan bread, and sourdough toast layered with labneh, za'atar, cucumber, and a honey drizzle. Middle Eastern flavors show up throughout: basterma-stuffed omelets, brioche sandwiches finished with Aleppo pepper, and a kunafa French toast that's become a signature — challah stuffed with vanilla cream, rolled in kataifi, griddled in butter, and finished with pistachios and orange blossom whipped cream.

The sandwich section leans into New York nostalgia. A chopped cheese made with ground beef and Aleppo pepper, a smokey pastrami that's drawn genuine praise from New Yorkers, and a chicken shawarma make up a lineup that's hard to pin to any single tradition. That's entirely the point.

Pastries are baked in-house daily — croissants, cinnamon buns that hit just the right note of sweetness, and seasonal specials that fill out the case with intention.

A Space Built for the Community

Located in Barcroft Plaza on Columbia Pike, across from the Goodwill and next to the Barcroft Community Center, the café sits in a stretch of Falls Church that's diverse and neighborhood-oriented. The fully halal menu — covering meats across breakfast, lunch, and dinner — reflects a genuine awareness of who the community is.

The space seats 45 comfortably, parking is ample, and the staff is consistently described as friendly and knowledgeable. It's the kind of place where you can open a laptop, linger over a second coffee, or just sit and let the morning slow down a little.

Powanda's background — lawyer, New Yorker, Afghan-American — shows up in every corner of the café. The name is a quiet tribute to where he comes from. The menu is a love letter to everywhere he's been. And the whole thing is, plainly, a gift to the neighborhood he's decided to call home.
