Many may not know that teaching is my second profession. I returned to school after thirteen years as a Commercial Plumber/Pipe fitter. While I enjoyed working with my hands and the sense of accomplishment that came from construction, my role had shifted from tradesman to superintendent on large mechanical projects. This was the typical progression and while I thought that was the career path that I wanted to take, I found myself unhappy and unable to leave the stresses of management when I went home. I had also been teaching Plumbing and Pipefitting apprenticeship classes. I found that I enjoyed teaching and was successful at making sense of difficult to understand concepts. A move from Central Missouri to North Iowa in 2009 was the perfect opportunity to make a career change. I started back to college with plans to finish my Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, but after 2 years I found myself drawn to helping others, especially in Mathematics.
