Mr. Mike
I am an Accredited Practicing Dietitian as well as a personal trainer and health coach with a background in biosciences. My day-to-day work is in the community providing nutrition consults, group education, healthy lifestyle workshops and group fitness classes as well as visiting local hospitals to help those with more acute issues. I have based my practice in rural Australia, travelling to multiple locations having worked some time in Melbourne. I’m working passionately in these areas at the moment and for foreseeable future yet I was born and raised in County Cork, Ireland.
Giving the correct advice as well as counseling and motivating are the major facets of my profession. So to do these well, people skills are essential and I truly love engaging with people using all forms of communication – Irish; if you are not aware are well known for their ability to converse!
I moved to the other side of the world; just me and my suitcase in 2009 and took on new challenges – completing postgraduate education, a career change and to seek out new opportunities and experiences. What helped immensely was regular communication with family and friends at home. All types – phone calls, text messages, emails, social media sites, and video calling.
But one very close family member wrote letters to me. I had not received a hand written letter in many years. Most of my mail is statements, bills or advertising so even a small thing like seeing my address on an envelope written by hand was genuinely appreciated and uplifting
When I read the letters I almost felt like I was being transported to the location where I thought it was written. I could hear the sender’s voice in the words and could imagine her pausing to think about what to write in the next paragraph. These letters were and still are, genuinely inspiring and genuinely motivational
Has this practice disappeared too soon? Yes I think definitely! I do embrace technology and believe that it is extremely important in today’s world but for many out there ; the incessant use of the latest technology advances to communicate creates an impersonal atmosphere.
So now I want to send letters to all those out there wanting to improve their lifestyle, lose weight and be healthier. I want to use this forgotten method of communication to motivate, inspire, advise and educate in a similar manner how I get motivate
