Mary Roaf

Flagstaff, Arizona, United States

As a dual appointment in the Departments of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies at Northern Arizona University, and an NAU alumna who completed my Masters degree in Anthropology in 2000, and my Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2008 from Temple University, I integrate an interdisciplinary approach to teaching two introductory courses in each department per semester for a total of four courses each semester. I also incorporate this cross-disciplinary approach in my service as a committee member on both anthropology and ethnic studies curriculum committees, and as a key participant in converting introductory anthropology classes to First Year Learning Initiative- (FYLI) certified courses. I extend this collaborative model to university- and nation-wide service through my membership on the University Diversity Subcommittee, my status as an affiliate with the Women and Gender Studies Department, and my memberships in the Society for Applied Anthropology and Critical Race Studies in Education Association. I recently helped to coordinate and host my little brother, NFL Hall of Famer Willy Roaf, at NAU as a guest presenter.
