In counseling sessions, couples are provided with practical advice and insight on how to rebuild or restore broken relationships.

The basic premise of counseling is to help couples explore their differences and find ways to maintain meaningful communication, while helping them to understand each other's needs and aspirations. As such, couples undergoing this process develop an improved understanding of the issues between them, which strengthens their relationship in the long run. However, it must be noted that relationship counseling is not a substitute for a frank talk between husband and wife; rather, it's an essential process that should complement and support the openness between them.

There are various couples therapy counseling programs to help couples in trouble. In general, these programs allow both partners to freely express their thoughts and feelings without being criticized by the other partner, thereby enabling the couple to resolve their relationship problems more effectively.
