Tyler Abdon
Student and Projectionist in Cincinnati, Ohio
From a very early age, I was well aware of my two passions in this world: books and movies. Accordingly, it came as a surprise to no one that when I came to Morehead State University I immediately opted for a major in English with a minor in Film Studies. Currently, I am a senior at MSU working on my final semester while simultaneously taking courses towards my M.A. in English.
Ultimately, I hope to be able to secure a job in post-secondary education as a Literature professor. In one sense, I feel as if a strong familiarity with the conventions of professional writing will help me in this regard by giving me a more comprehensive understanding of rhetoric. In addition to this, I feel as if a greater knowledge of the various forms of professional writing and the mediums for its expression may help me to better convey complex information in a classroom setting.
Generally, my experiences with writing have leaned towards the creative side of the spectrum, specifically in the direction of prose fiction and short films. However, since late October I have been employed as the projectionist at a local movie theater; surprisingly, this job has involved a great deal of writing. In addition to writing internal reports and memos, I have been responsible for preparing training material covering the maintenance and operation of our equipment. Accordingly, it is my hope that this class will not only help prepare me for my future professional goals, but will also have a bearing on my work at the present time.
