Martie Mtange is a Kenyan‐based curator, communications strategist and media innovator whose work sits at the intersection of narrative justice, cultural empowerment and ecosystem building. As Deputy Curator (now Curator) at Baraza Media Lab, he has championed a vision of African storytelling that centers agency, equity and experimentation.
With a background spanning strategic communications for development organizations (including the Aga Khan Development Network, the African Alliance and the People’s Medicines Alliance), Martie has mobilized creative platforms and media collaborations to amplify health equity, labor rights and social-justice narratives.
Under his curatorial leadership, Baraza Media Lab has broadened Kenya’s media horizon, merging filmmakers, artists, tech designers and journalists into inclusive practice spaces. He curated and produced initiatives such as the annual Africa Media Festival (AMF), themed “Bridging Gaps, Connecting Media Futures”, where he served as Deputy Curator and helped convene over 1,300 media professionals from across Africa.
Martie brings a deep belief in the power of media to heal memory, contest colonial legacies, and foster sustainable creative economies. He writes and speaks about the ethics of storytelling (“who tells our story?”, he asks) and has nurtured spaces where under-represented voices can lead.
