Mudasser Ali
I am a cross-academic specialist studying modern cults from a Religious Studies & Life Science perspective. My current work involves an in-depth study of NGE The Nation of Gods & Earths "5%, Five Percenters" (traditionally classified as an islamic cult, an offshoot of the Nation of Islam) in Southern Ontario. Specifically, I am an undertaking a socio-historical survey of NGE communities documenting employment, creed transfer and art-culture development. Furthermore, a proprietary 'nutrition-deficiency factors of chronic disease' (NDFCD) matrix will be used as an analytical tool.
Previously, I've studied the Deobandi Madhab of the Hanafi School of Jurisprudence in Sunni Islam. Specifically, I focused on Deobandi-Barelvi polemics, Deobandi institutionalizing in Canada, and cross-madhab history. I write about modern espionage in islamic communities, islamic music countercultures (Taqwacore, Hip-Hop) with a specific interest in Sherman 'Abd-Al Hakim' Jackson's 'Blackamerican' school of historical African American identity with cross-referencing influences of Michael Eric Dyson, Marshall McLuhan and Norman Mailer. The development of 1978-1982 Prog-Rock movements in Toronto continue to inform my research.
I've been published in Q-News London "A Pious Mole" Oct 2006, I.M. Magazine McMaster and have previously spoken at the New Directions in the Humanities Conference 2007 in Paris. I was commissioned for a video installation at the AGH Art Gallery of Hamilton 2010 World Film Festival. My submission was a silent film entitled 'Street City' exploring hip-hop culture in Hamilton, Canada. My work has been featured in XXL. I'm currently Creative Director of LVLY$L ZEBRAGANG and Brand Manager for Hip-Hop artist NEAKO and (World Music Group) WMG LLC. I am co-founder of LVL Merchants with NEAKO and co-designer of the lifestyle company. Phi Delta Theta (Ontario Gamma) Member Since 2010. I reside in Toronto.
