Once in a while, there comes a leader who people look up to and start believing in because they find in him a warrior who would go to any lengths to protect their cause. This is something that has been experienced by the people of Meghalaya, under their present Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma.
Born to teacher parents Dr. Sangma’s aim was to serve his people from the very beginning and that is what he has done relentlessly all throughout his career in every field that he involved himself into. After studying medicine in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal he practiced medicine for a short time before heading off in a different direction to serve people. His political career has seen both ups and downs but he has come out victorious in most of his endeavours to attain the pinnacle of success. Starting out in 1993 as an independent candidate for the Legislative Assembly in Meghalaya the journey has been a whirlwind to finally getting elected at the Chief Minister of Meghalaya in 2010 and serving the people.
After attaining office brought about various reforms in the system that the Meghalaya CM promised his people. He took control of the cardinal departments of education, finance and health. One of the prime efforts of Dr. Sangma has been in the field of health with the introduction of the Medical and Health Insurance Scheme that gives every resident of the state the chance to access good medical facilities. He has made immense efforts to make Meghalaya a prime tourist attraction. He has also been a very active social worker and taken a keen interest in social awareness and socio-economic advancement particularly in the rural areas. He is also a founder of Mirachel Foundation which is associated with many Social Service Groups. They form self-help groups and carry out counselling sessions for the deprived. Encouragement of the youth has been his prime focus too. Recently he has sanctioned the building of two engineering colleges in the state. He is also the Chief Patron of Ampati Youth Welfare Club which promotes activities of youth in sports and culture.
