Muthoni Wachira

Impact Investor, Innovator, and Influencer in Kenya

My life story is one of breaking barriers and championing inclusion. In 2009, I left a lucrative investment banking career in London and moved back to Kenya to become the co-founder of a social enterprise. In 2015, I made the transition from operator to impact investor. And in 2019, I was recognized as one of twelve venture capitalists to know on the African continent and the only black woman on the list.

As a woman and a person of color who has broken into venture, I am passionate about financial inclusion and diversity. I work with corporates, high-growth startups and impact-driven organisations on strategy, investment and governance with a focus on bridging the early-stage funding gap faced by women and indigenous founders.

I have 15 years experience in corporates such as Safaricom, Merrill Lynch and American Express; FinTech startups such as JUMO, Uncap and 4G Capital; impact-driven organisations such as EWB Canada, WomenWork and Schooner Africa Fund; and a proven track record at executive and board level.

When I'm not working, I enjoy walking around with my camera and two children. I like to cook, listen to music (mainly jazz, neosoul and contemporary worship) and dream up business ideas that I'll probably never get around to starting. I also get a lot of pleasure from snuggling up with a good book, traveling to gain real insights into the relationship between culture and cuisine and attending speaking events — as a speaker or listener.

I am a Kenyan native, an Actuarial Science graduate; CFA Charterholder; a leading voice in impact investing as featured in Disrupt Africa, VentureBurn, Impact Alpha, Briter Bridges and Forbes; and a visiting lecturer at the University of Capetown’s Bertha Center for Social Innovation.
