I am a linguist with a concentration on Educational Linguistics, Bilingualism, and Sociolinguistics.

My work has two main areas: my practice as a language instructor, and the second one, my academic tenure and research.

As a language instructor I specialize in the teaching of Spanish and English as a Foreign Language.

At NYU, I created and developed a program in Spanish for Medical Personnel, taught CORE courses in our graduate level program on Applied Linguistics and developed strong liaison and faculty collaboration at NYU CLACS in the School of Arts & Sciences. All affairs were conducted successfully during all my tenure at NYU.

I have a pedagogical and academic practice of 22 years (1990-2012) as a faculty member at Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University.

My academic production emphasizes: the integration of linguistics and education (“the relevance of linguistics for education and the reverse”); the close relation-ships among research, theory, policy, and practice within Educational Linguistics (“a problem-oriented discipline”); and the focus on language learning and teaching (“scope with depth”). All these as proposed by Dr Bernard Spolsky.

My topics of interest: decolonization of knowledge and power; epistemic diversity; language policies; language rights; technologies of communication; linguistic and semiotic landscapes; the movement of people, languages, ideas and goods across national boundaries. I am the founder of a Facebook group called “Language Rights, Derechos Linguisticos, Lenguas en Riesgo,” which has approximately 4,900 members.
