North, South, East and West don't have plenty of meaning around the island of Oahu. Sure, there are some references to these points-of-the-compass: The North Shore is famous for its major trend scan and West Oahu is thriving with development, but you're a lot more likely to hear the word Windward Oahu than you're East Oahu and we have not begun discussing the area conditions for course of mauka, makai, ewa and Diamond Head.

Consider for a moment the geography of Oahu--it's an area, surrounded by water (demonstrably) that rises from sea level around its coast line into a group of mountain ridges in its center. Diamond Head is a prominent coastal landmark found on the point of the island. These functions are what are employed for instructions and navigation by those folks who grew up o-n the island of Oahu. No seeking moss privately of the tree. No sun rises in the East and Sets in the West junk. Guidelines are simple and direct. You are able to get Mauka (towards the mountains) o-r Makai (towards the ocean). You are able to go Diamond Head (towards Diamond Head crater) or Ewa (from Diamond Head crater). Because irrespective of where you're on the island, you can almost always see the water, the hills and, at least until recently, Diamond Head using these geographical markers to obtain from point A to point B make sense.

To those people who grew up o-n Oahu this is easy, simple to understand and clear to convey. It is only if you try to describe it to someone unfamiliar with the island's online principle that it starts to get complicated. For instance, let us say that you're standing in the town of Kailua on the Windward side (east side) of the area, facing North then clearly Makai would be on your right (or east) and Mauka would be on your left (or West). Ewa would even be o-n your left (or West) and Diamond Head would be for your Southwest. Now let's say that you are at Pearl Harbor in West Oahu and again facing North then ipso facto Makai would now be on your left (or west) and Mauka would be on your right (or east.) You'd be in Ewa and Diamond Head would be to your Southeast. Now, let's put on the North Shore of Oahu you facing North whilst in Haleiwa.
