Nacho Marlats
Photographer, Public Speaker, and Teacher in Medellín, Colombia
Nacho Marlats is an Argentine documentary and travel photographer recognized for his work exploring cultural identity, territory, and human presence across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. His perspective is shaped by a Latin American sensibility that understands travel not as consumption, but as encounter.
Through long-term projects and immersive journeys, he has developed a body of work that moves beyond tourism and engages deeply with local communities, traditions, and lived realities. His practice centers on portraiture in diverse cultural contexts, where building trust and understanding social dynamics are essential. Each project is approached with patience and respect, emphasizing meaningful encounters over spectacle.
He is the founder of Los Fotonautas and director of the Academia Iberoamericana de Fotografía (AIEFE), initiatives through which he has led numerous educational expeditions and cultural programs. His leadership has positioned him as a prominent voice in contemporary travel photography in the Ibero-American sphere, advocating for an ethical and reflective approach to the genre.
Marlats is also the creator and driving force behind the International Photographer’s Day (February 20) and the FotoNaratón Iberoamericana, a collective photographic event that connects photographers across countries in a shared act of creation and community.
In an era dominated by fast and disposable imagery, his work stands for depth, context, and human connection.
