In his first year as an MP he was appointed Deputy Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Posts, and later served as Deputy Minister of Education and Deputy Minister of Finance.

Najib Tun Razak's Promises

• A highway, a spanking new stadium and an end to the people's water woes.
• Najib pledged that Barisan would build a highway linking Kuala Krai and Kota Baru, build a spanking new stadium and resolve the people's water woes if it is given the mandate to rule the state.
• Barisan will also build 3,000 houses under its people-friendly housing scheme, set up a Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus for 5,000 students, start a Rapid Kota Baru bus service and build a 50-million ringgit (US$16.58-million) mosque that will be the biggest in Kelantan.
• Promised to present two big gifts to the people of Penang under a Barisan Nasional (BN) state government after the next general election — 20,000 units of affordable homes and a monorail service.
