Nancy Black

New Bedford Massachusetts

My complete name is Nancy “Talking Eyes” Black. I am a proud member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, born and raised in Southeastern Massachusetts and a CPA candidate. In a few years, I will be the only member of my tribe to hold a Certified Public Accounting License.

In 2010, I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting Major.

During my time at UMass, I was President of the Accounting Student Association for the 2008-2009 semester. My goal as president was to provide members with information and skills that would help them to be more competitive in the job market. Not only did I provide them literature about internships, and career opportunities, but also guest speakers and coordinated UMass’ very first student organized Accounting and Finance Career Fair where 150 students and 20 Accounting firms, Bank Institutions, and Becker CPA Review Representatives attended. This career fair was so successful that my officers and I, received Certificates of Recognition for Leadership.

Additionally, I was accepted to Grand Canyon University’s online Masters Accountancy Program, While attending, I received a Certificate of Excellence for class participation and encouraging follow students. This award is very seldom handed out so for me, it was in honor to receive such an award. Unfortunately, I had to took a "Leave of Abscence" after dislocating my shoulder and will reconsider resuming my pursuit of my masters later.

Furthermore, I am a student member of the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA's) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA's).

Right now, I am taken time to concentrate on launching my career in accounting as an entry-level Staff Accountant. Although I continue to look for employment, I am immersing myself in advanced Excel, Quickbooks, and study for the CPA exam.
