Nate McDermott

I am a painter based in the Berkshires, Massachusetts, where the isolation and atmosphere deeply inform the work. My practice revolves around mixed-media painting on paper, a medium I find both intimate and flexible. Much of the work undergoes a transformation as I cut, rearrange, and collage sections—allowing the piece to evolve through a process of deconstruction and reassembly.

What drives me is the search for something alive and emotionally resonant—something that feels truthful. I work intuitively, often using memory as a kind of pigment, layering fragments of thought and sensation to explore the tension between what is solid and what is slipping away. My compositions play with weight, shifting space, and presence, aiming to hold stillness and movement in the same breath. I am not documenting but rather translating experience—allowing the work to become a quiet conversation between the internal and external worlds.
