Neva Kares Poli Talladen
I'm a social entrepreneur with a strong background in creative writing. Born in a family of resilient, independent-minded women, I grew up witnessing my paternal aunt and my own mother working themselves to the bone (while maintaining other entrepreneurial pursuits to augment income) to lift their families out of near-poverty and send their children to excellent schools -- all while caring for their emotional needs growing up.
While my parents encouraged me to be a writer, it became clear after years of trying that I would never make a comfortable living for myself as one. Having inherited the independent streak, the prospect of depending on others (i.e. parents, a husband) for the rest of my life was also out of the question.
In 2007, based on a strong concept and fit of determination, I launched Leyende, my own brand of handmade natural and organic bath and body products. I quickly discovered that entrepreneurship and leadership came naturally to me, which gave my business a quick foothold in the local market. But I wanted to do more than concern myself with the bottom-line.
In my various dealings, I encountered many single mothers or disadvantaged women who were hard-working and yearning to improve their lives. Recognizing how fortunate I was to have a mother and other female role models who gave a me a chance to follow my passion and succeed, I realized that I can also inspire and empower these women to improve themselves, to earn a living in an honest, honorable way that they can be proud of.
With the help and support of Krie Lopez (owner of Messy Bessy natural household cleaners), I began Leyende's work-study program in 2009. It's not yet a perfect system, but I am learning and growing, along with my women staff, and I'm looking ahead to the future, to a bigger and better opportunity for many disadvantaged women in the Philippines.
In five years, when I am financially stable, I will continue writing and (finally) publish my books.
