Newman Osafo is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. A pharmacologist with specialised expertise in inflammation and natural product pharmacology, he brings nearly a decade of integrated experience in teaching, research, and graduate supervision, combining scientific rigour with a genuine commitment to developing the next generation of pharmacological researchers.

His research centres on the anti-inflammatory, anticancer, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory properties of natural products and their bioactive constituents. He has made particularly noteworthy contributions to the advancement of knowledge on Xylopia aethiopica and its principal bioactive compound, xylopic acid. With more than ninety peer-reviewed publications to his name, Newman has significantly advanced scientific understanding of natural therapeutics for inflammation, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. His long-term research agenda integrates pharmacology, toxicology, and translational medicine, with the overarching aim of developing safer, plant-based therapies and novel compounds of plant origin for inflammatory, immune-mediated diseases, and cancers.

Newman has successfully supervised several PhD and MPhil candidates whose theses span a wide range of research areas, including neuroinflammation, cataractogenesis, cancer and inflammation pharmacology, and anti-HIV therapy. Alongside his supervisory responsibilities, he contributes substantially to scientific scholarship as an Associate Editor, editorial board member, and peer reviewer for leading international journals, among them Frontiers in Pharmacology, Scientific Reports, and the International Journal of Inflammation. He has also served as Guest Editor for special issues focused on natural products, inflammation, and cancer.

Newman has earned wide recognition through international research collaborations, invited scholarly lectures, and competitive research awards. His funded work has been supported by prestigious bodies including the European Union's Erasmus+ Programme, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the KNUST Research Fund. He is an active member of several distinguished professional organisations, including the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), the International Society of Pharmacovigilance (ISoP), and the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA). He has presented his research at major international scientific meetings and delivered invited lectures at conferences and institutions around the world.

Beyond his research and teaching, Newman has served in the roles of assessor, moderator, curriculum developer, and visiting scholar at national institutions and at international academic bodies and universities in Norway, Finland, and the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP), an honour that reflects his broader dedication to mentoring emerging scientists, fostering scientific leadership, and strengthening pharmacological research capacity across the African continent.
