Something crazy happened to me when I turned 40. Everyone I knew who'd made it past 40 warned me it would happen - my sister, my girlfriends...but I didn't believe them. I mean, come on, it's just a number, it's meaningless really, right? Well, maybe. I'm beginning to think that our cultural "memes" can shape our own experience, whether we want them to or not, and "women and 40" is a pretty big one, if you are in fact, a woman.

Something did happen to me when I turned 40, I started to get really serious about my health, about how I wanted to be in the world and how I wanted to experience it. I began to think really seriously about how I was fueling my body and how my food choices affected my mental clarity. Truth is, I had known this for over twenty years, but...whatever, booze and scones tasted better than mental clarity did.

Something does happen as we get older, lots of things happen, and that's a good thing. We get wiser, our priorities change, what we value shifts, and in my case, the value I place on my health became more important - and I believe that taking that seriously means I'm taking all the relationships in my life more seriously. That's waking up to your own life.
