NHM Abu Bakar
Teacher in Bangladesh
Dr.NHM Abu Bakar is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Chittagong (CU), Chittagong, Bangladesh. He joined the University in 1998. Formerly he had been a faculty of Philosophy at the Chittagong University College from 1979-1998. He completed his Ph.D. in Historiography of Philosophy from Rabindra Bharati University, India in 1996-97 under the supervision of Professor Himadri Benerjee. His work was on “Contemporary Trends of Philosophical Studies in Bangladesh since 1971-1990” . Prior to this, he completed his BA (Hons) and Masters in Philosophy in 1975 and 1976 respectively from the University of Chittagong. Besides his major in Philosophy, he had allied minors in Sociology and Political Science.
At CU, Dr. Bakar teaches Asian Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Research Methodology, Bio-ethics and related courses. In addition, he enjoys helping research students and tries to listen their research problems meticulously. From 2014-2018, he coordinated a subproject under HEQEP (Higher Education Quality Enhance Project) funded by the World Bank and UGC on improvement of teaching- learning for his department.
He has been passionate about inter-religious issues for a long time since his student life. Now, he is the Secretary General of RfP (Religions for Peace) Bangladesh Chapter. For his contribution in the field interreligious arena, he had been awarded Honorary Citizenship from the Mayor of Louisville City County, Kentucky, USA with all rights in 2008.
His other field of research interest includes Comparative Religion, Trends of Asian Religion, and Research Methodology.
He published several papers in reputed research journals in and outside the country along with two books (1) Bangladesher Somokalin Darshan Charchar Itihas and (2) Darshan-Gobeshona Padhati.
He also visited several countries around the world (USA, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Myanmar, India etc) in connection to his research. As a good researcher, he had been attached to several foreign funded projects on philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Interreligious Issues and Socio-economic problems.
He enjoyed a Short-term Fellowship on Religious Studies at the University of Louisville, Kentucky in 2008.
In fact, during the tenure of the Chairmanship of Dr. Abu Bakar , Philosophy Department has got a new shape and become vibrant in the whole university for its different activities related to improvement teaching and research.
