Consultant, Project Manager, and Organizer in Charlotte

Hi, I’m Nichel Dunlap Thompson, and I am running for Mecklenburg County Commissioner At-Large. Over the course of 15 years, I have led the community I was born and raised in by advocating for the underserved, underrepresented as well the working class of Charlotte. I am a graduate of Myers Park High School, raised in Southside Homes. It is a community where equitable services are a neccessary component for quaility of life solutions.

It was after the untimely death of Ethan Rivera my frustrations and determinations grew.

As a former operator with CATS, (Charlotte Area Transit System), operator and commuter safety is a number one priority of mine. The unfortunate recent events have shown we are in dire need of more in depth conversations.

Board of County Commissioners (At-Large)

Policy Platform & Governing Priorities:

Transportation: Access That Moves People Forward

Transportation is not about roads—it is about opportunity. As an at-large commissioner, I will prioritize a transportation system that is safe, reliable, equitable, and future-ready.

Policy Focus:

Expand and modernize public transit with routes that actually connect residents to jobs, schools, healthcare, and economic centers

Invest in safe pedestrian and bike infrastructure, especially in historically underserved corridors

Align transportation planning with housing and workforce hubs to reduce commute time and cost

Leverage federal and state infrastructure funding with measurable local accountability

Invest in robotics, automation, and advanced manufacturing training programs

Outcome:

Reduced transportation barriers, increased workforce participation, and safer mobility countywide.

Mental Health: Treat It Like Public Infrastructure:

Mental health is not optional—it is foundational. County government must stop reacting to crises and start building systems that prevent them.

Circumstances and quality of life has changed for everyone, our policy, execution and decision making must be reflective for sustainability of all systems.

It is my hope the residents of Mecklenburg County will allow me to serve you from a place of authenticity and lived empowerment.

See you at the polls March 3, 2026.
