Dr. Nicholas Outa

Consultant, Writer, and Editor in Kenya

I’m an aquaculture researcher, scientific communication trainer, and consultant passionate about making science accessible and actionable. Over the past decade, I’ve balanced three passions — researching sustainable aquaculture systems, training and mentoring researchers across Africa, and consulting for organizations such as the World Bank, WorldFish, Practical Action, and Farm Africa.

I hold a PhD in Fisheries and Aquaculture from Maseno University, an MSc in Limnology and Wetland Management (UNESCO-IHE, Netherlands & Egerton University, Kenya), and a BSc in Applied Aquatic Science. I am also a certified trainer in Scientific Communication through the Training Centre in Communication (TCC- Africa, 2018).

I have authored more than 70 peer-reviewed papers (Google Scholar h-index: 17) and contributed to multiple aquaculture and blue economy projects. As a Research Capacity Advisor at TCC Africa and founder of WritingHub Africa, I’ve trained over 1,000 scientists from 15+ African countries in scientific writing, publishing, and grant proposal development. I also serve as an Academic Editor at PLOS ONE and Submissions Moderator at AfricArXiv, helping strengthen open science and research visibility across the continent.

Beyond academia, I founded Dala Integrated Aquaculture Hub (DalAqua), where we’ve trained over 500 smallholder farmers in climate-smart aquaculture practices. My mission is to bridge the gap between complex research and practical solutions, empowering both scientists and farmers to drive sustainable change.

Let’s connect if you’re passionate about aquaculture innovation, scientific writing, or research capacity building in Africa — or just want to geek out about fish and research!
