Nicole Kraft

Columbus, Ohio

I joined Ohio State full time in the Autumn 2010 quarter after serving six years as an adjunct professor of magazine writing.

From 1996 until June 2010 I worked for the United States Trotting Association, as executive editor of Hoof Beats magazine--the world's largest and most honored harness racing magazine--and, since 2006, as director of communications. While at the USTA, I authored "100 Years in Harness," a book marking harness racing in the 20th century.

Prior to that, I was a newspaper editor and reporter in both Philadelphia and the Napa Valley of California, and served as press secretary for Pennsylvania Congressman Jon D. Fox. I worked also in publicity for both the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and Domain Chandon Winery.

I am an active freelance magazine writer, contributing to publications across North America, and speak frequently before groups of all skills and ages on feature writing, magazine publishing, social media tools and their use in personal branding.

My recent focus in teaching and research has been utilizing iPads and iTunes U to "flip" journalism classrooms and provide a self-contained learning environment for multimedia journalism. In 2013 I was awarded the first $25,000 Digital First Impact Grant to put iPads in our news writing classroom.

I currently have five courses on iTunes U and have written a pair of interactive journalism textbooks: "Always Get the Name of the Dog: A Guide to Media Interviewing," and "Writing Like Rabbits: A Guide to Creating and Selling Magazine Articles." Both "Writing and Editing for News" and "Always Get the Name of the Dog" have been No. 1 on iTunes U, and my interactive book was featured in the Apple international newsletter.

In 2014 Apple further showcased our iTunes work when I was the first higher-end faculty member featured in the company's new online "Faculty Speaker Series," and in an Apple Education webinar.

In 2015 I was named an Apple Distinguished Educator.
