Financial Services Consultant in Singapore
I graduated from Nanyang Technological University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) majoring in Psychology. Psychology as a subject intrigues me but I know I will not make it my career.
I minored in Business and in my last year of University, the faculty started a Principles of Risk and Insurance module. I was curious about how risk management and insurance worked, having bought a savings plan by myself when I was 17. I learned the fundamentals of the industry in that module.
The main concept of insurance - the idea of spreading of risk - has been around for as long as human existence. Hunters hunt in groups in case someone was injured, the rest can still bring food back. Insurance is one of the oldest industries around. So I understand that there is a value and basis to risk management.
Graduating with a degree, I went to job hunt like every other graduates. I was not all that keen on a 9-5 job, hence I took my time searching while pursuing other interests in night classes.
It was then when my mentor, Susan Dunn, approached me to see if I was keen in a career that help people plan their finances. My first instinct was "I don't want to sell insurance!". I did not doubt the value my work could bring, but the social stigma of the job deters me.
My friends and family were not that all supportive when I shared with them my plans to join this industry. They think that I have wasted my degree and could have found a "better" job.
Still, I am very thankful to clients who have given me a chance and trusted me enough to let me handle their financial planning. 5 years in this competitive industry is a testament to that.
Throughout my 9 going onto 10 years as a Financial Services Consultant, I realized that my experience as a young adult getting my own savings plan, to a married couple planning a future together, to the responsibilities of caring for my child, has helped me understand the needs of my clients every step of the way.
My expertise and portfolio has expended to not just the usual personal insurance, but I've also done retirement planning, wealth accumulation through investments and estate planning for my clients. I've worked with businesses to bring employee medical benefits to their staff, worked with them to retain and reward their staff as well.
This journey has been an immensely satisfying one. I am looking forward to work with more individuals, families and businesses to touch more lives.
